Mad Men Wiki

The Establishment is slang for the dominant group, the elites, who hold the power and authority in a nation or culture. When the narrative of Mad Men began in 1960, there was little evidence of the anti-establishment. Midge Daniels and her entourage in Greenwich Village were a strange commodity in a world dominated by the Mad Men in their grey flannel suits. In the later seasons, the styles have become more relaxed and the anti-establishment, hippie culture is emerging. Yet, there are those who still hold to the old ways, and even when some attempt to get hip (see Pete Campbell in his West Coast style), they still cry out that they are and always have been part of the establishment.
